Vuyolwethu Reoagile Seripe is a freelance writer and artist based in Johannesburg. Apart from working on corporate writing projects she contributes articles to a variety of publications and is a keen observer of South Africa’s emerging urban cultures.

The first packet of beads I bought were a metallic blue, which I strung together to create a bracelet came apart with two minutes on my wrist. I started to string beads as often as I could, until I made something beautiful one day and sold it to my cousin for R5 and I bought cigarettes and sweets with the money. My beadwork began to support my habit, so I had to keep production consistent… until I finished high school, I was able to smoke enough times a day to stop the cravings.

I teamed up with another cigarette smoking chick that also needed to support her habit, we were an effective duo that produced, produced which meant an income was coming our way on the regular, which meant cigarettes and a new habit- booze! Soon enough our hand to mouth business became an emotional roller coaster and we broke up after joining a Craft Enterprise Learnership. In this learnership, I decided that I am a printmaker and decided 6to come up to Jo’burg from the friendly city of Port Elizabeth, where I joined Artist Proof Studio and begun the 3year course in printmaking. After another year, I resigned and spread my wings in a bizarre direction. I took up one more learnership with VEGA Imagination Lab, where I did Advertising and Branding and decided to trade that to take up mentorship with writer, Andrew Miller.

I am a story writer and I tell stories in different ways, with my jewellery being one of them. This particular collection is made from beads I have been collecting over the past three years and objects from different spaces and time. The most recent part of the collection was a gift for my 21st birthday in August; which represent an important part of my life. All my earrings are unique, I have never replicated a pair and this is my main principle as a jewellery designer.

My jewellery is a reflection of what anyone desires, their desire to be a good person and striving to be good person and having the courage to be what you want to be. My jewellery expresses a need for love- to learn to love and to be lovable.

This particular range of Jewellery is just for my baby brother, Aganang Lula, who has always appreciated beauty in the smallest things.
